Outlander dimensions: Four ways to make Sophie Skelton shine in season 4

Outlander season 3 episode 5 sneak peek

We’re back with yet another edition of our ongoing Outlander dimensions article series and this time around, we’re putting some of the focus squarely on Sophie Skelton.

Much like we’ve said in our recent pieces spotlighting Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan, it’s more than clear at this point that the talent is present for exceptional performances. We also know that the writers have the skill and proficiency to make them stand out all the more. What we are trying to figure out with this ongoing series is simply this: How can these actors shine the brightest? What scenes will make them the most appealing to Emmy viewers down the line? ]

Writing this about Skelton and the character of Brianna Fraser today is especially appealing, given the fact that we are entering such an important season for the character and it’s one that will emotionally test her unlike any other. That means, in turn, great material that will put her at the forefront and hopefully make her an awards contender in the future.

With all of this laid out, here are four different dimensions to her character that can be highlighted to make her as strong as she can possibly be.

1. Her enthusiasm – A big part of what made Brianna such an appealing character from her first appearance in “Dragonfly in Amber” onward was her thirst for life. She had a sense of adventure and a zeal that you often see in both Claire and Jamie both. While she will go through some extremely trying times and horrible situations, we don’t want to see this sort of passion ever fully dissipate from her. Bree can be a beacon of light to other people and Skelton plays that part of her so well.

2. Her vulnerability – Any actor wants to play scenes where they can bare their character’s soul and we imagine that with Outlander season 4, there are going to be many different opportunities for that. The best way for the writers/producers to cultivate said opportunities is to give Skelton a combination of big, dramatic sequences but then also moments that are a little more small and subtle. It allows her a wider range of scenes to embrace.

3. Her intelligence – A part of what makes Bree stand out as a character is that she has so much knowledge for such a young age — seeing that play into 18th-century America (when she arrives there, of course) is going to be a cause for tremendous excitement. It also helps Sophie stand out; she carries with her unique knowledge that few other characters have and seeing how that knowledge is used should prove exciting.

4. Her strength – This is probably the most important part of all. What makes Outlander a remarkable show is that it provides so many opportunities to see characters persevere in some extremely difficult times. We want to see Skelton as Brianna deal with this adversity and then find ways to emerge on the other side. She has the support system around her and we certainly know that the character has the strength within herself.

All in all, here’s to hoping that Skelton, as Brianna, has a story like no other moving into season 4. Expect to see it on Starz this fall.
