In the new sneak peek below, you can get a small sense as to what is going on here and the situation that Claire and Shaun find themselves in. They inform a husband that while working on his wife, they discovered that she was expecting a baby. This completely seems to take him aback, especially when he had a vasectomy prior to the two of them being married and that was ten years ago. He knows that his wife is hardly the sort of person to cheat, and the odds of his vasectomy failing appear to be incredibly low.
So … what is going on here? That seems to be one of the more-interesting mysteries that this episode is bringing to the table. We don’t think that The Good Doctor is all of a sudden going to be looking at immaculate conceptions as some sort of significant story point, so there has to be some sort of medical reasoning for what is going on here. Shaun may be stating the truth here with what he says: “It’s more likely she got pregnant from someone who is not you.” Shaun never has a way of delivering some of this news properly, but more often than not he is right with some of the suggestions that he offers.
This episode will be a good test to Shaun’s ability to understand and deal with difficult situations; in general, we’re looking at an episode here that is about listening to patients and understanding what they need. There are different varieties of medicine out there — there is the super-clinical way in which you think that you’re always right based on the textbook and your past history. Then, there is the personal way where you try and base a lot of your coverage on what it is that the patient is telling you. We think that the right way to ideally treat someone is with a combination of both — your skill set and knowledge matters extensively, but sometimes, patients can help you to understand things that you never would have understood otherwise.
Remember, above all else this episode of The good Doctor will likely be emotional. That’s something that we’ve fully established is in the show’s DNA at the moment.
