Cameron Monaghan leaving Shameless, Ian Gallagher — and soon!

Shameless season 9 premiere date

There is some breaking news coming out in the world of Shamelessand it absolutely is sudden — Cameron Monaghan is leaving the series. Not only that, but he will be gone from the show even sooner than you’d imagine.

In a new post over on Instagram, Monaghan himself confirmed the news of his departure, making it clear in the process that the new episode on Sunday night is going to be the final one for the show and for his character of Ian Gallagher. It is sudden, but clearly this is something that he wanted rather than drawing out the goodbye.

This move does also make a certain degree of sense when you consider where the series is in the story right now. At the end of this past episode, it appeared as though Ian could be heading to prison after entering his not guilty plea via way of insanity. This disrupted the Gay Jesus movement, but this may also be the way for him to avoid a substantial amount of jail time.

Since starting Shameless Monaghan has taken on a wide array of film projects, and also has made a number of appearances on Gotham as Jerome and his brother Jeremiah, two characters who bear similarity to the Joker.

I have been a series regular on this show for roughly ten years. I was the tender age of fifteen when we shot the pilot, and I came of age in so many ways, both legally and personally. I was very lucky to mature and grow with this show. Experiencing so many firsts, maturing as an actor, a professional, and a human. In the process gaining friends, family, and the best coworkers a very lucky actor could ask for, and for this I can be nothing but gracious. All good things come to an end. An old cliche, but one that rings true with a sincerity and clarity especially in moments like these. Everything ends. The next episode will be my last. I have known since last year, but I didn’t want to give it away too early as I wanted this season to be a surprise for the audience, allowing them to experience Ian’s unsure journey with his character. This role has been a joy to inhabit, a wild and special ride, and I’d like to thank #Shameless as well as you, the viewers, for being there with him. Goodbye, Ian Clayton Gallagher. We’ll meet again?
