Poldark season 6: Is there a way that it could happen?

As we start to approach Poldark season 5, it feels clear that the plan is for it to be the final season. That is how Masterpiece in America has promoted it, and it does feel like most people involved are ready to move on and do some other things.

Do we get that? Absolutely, especially when you consider the career arcs for Aidan Turner, Eleanor Tomlinson, and many other cast members. These performers are still young, even with their characters being aged up every year, and with that come a wide array of different opportunities in TV and film. They likely watch to spread their wings and try out some other things. Poldark is a fairly good gig in that filming only takes up a certain percentage of the year, but it is still something that occupies many months on the schedule and those months can be filled in a wide array of other means. There could be opportunities to do some other things in the fall for the near future.

For BBC One itself, maybe Poldark going off the air presents a nice opportunity to do some other things as well, but we do think down the line, that door could remain open for a season 6. It’s unlikely that the entirety of the source material will be adapted for season 5, and there are some scenes that can be translated down the line. There’s a larger time jump in Winston Graham’s story that could be brought to life, and there are two different ways that it could be told in the future.

A proper sixth season – Think several years into the future. Would the cast want to reconvene then and explore this story further? Given that the Downton Abbey cast has reunited for this sort of thing, we certainly think that it could be possible. Even if you were to do only five or sixth episodes, that could be a worthy reunion.

A series of specials – Maybe you could do a number of two-hour specials and air them either in a block similar to Sherlock, or one every couple of years. We’d say Christmas Specials could be fun — not stories about Christmas, but rather just stories to air on Christmas — but we don’t know how Poldark gets that real estate when they’ve never had it before.

We think the BBC will always be interested in more Poldark; it’s just up to if the creative team and the cast all feel the same.
