The Big Bang Theory ending to Jim Parsons’ reported desire to leave

Big Bang Theory season 11 episode 19

The Big Bang Theory is officially ending now after its twelfth season on the air, but the apparent reason behind it may surprise some — it seems to have come down to a single actor’s decision more than anything else.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the decision to conclude the show is related to actor Jim Parsons’ own decision to leave the series after being a part of it for the last 12 years. There were talks with the network and the actors about potentially doing two more years of the series beyond this one, which would have taken the show up to a season 14. To go along with that, it would have also netted many of the cast members as much as $50 million.

Ultimately, though, we don’t blame Parsons if he feels that it’s time to pack it in. He’s been doing a number of other projects for a long time during his off months, and while The Big Bang Theory isn’t the most demanding TV job schedule-wise, it still takes up a significant chunk of the year and it’s hard to schedule other projects when you’re devoting most of your time to the show.

At least we can say this: Good on CBS and Warner Bros. TV for deciding to end the show rather than continuing without one of their main cast members. Twelve years is a great run, and we’re sure that Parsons will continue to do narration over on Young Sheldon … mostly because that’s a pretty easy gig and he doesn’t need to be there for filming or anything of the sort.

The final season of The Big Bang Theory is premiering on CBS next month and judging from what the network is saying, we have to believe they are going to craft one of the most-epic final seasons imaginable … even if the network wanted to keep things going for a little while longer.
