The Big Bang Theory season 12 will officially be series’ last, CBS confirms

The Big Bang Theory season 11 episode 2

The end is officially here for The Big Bang Theory — season 12 is going to be the last one for the series on CBS.

In a statement today, the network confirmed the news and we appreciate that they are announcing early on rather than dragging it out for a considerable period of time. The timing of this announcement allows the cast and crew to assemble the best possible send-off — and, it also ensures that the show ends while its ratings are still incredibly strong.

Here is what the network had to say:

“We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.”

The Big Bang Theory is going to be ending an epic run where it was the most-popular comedy on TV for many years — in some ways, you can consider it to be the last great mega-sitcom with the multi-camera format and the laugh track. It’s been harder and harder for a show like this to succeed in the modern era but somehow, The Big Bang Theory managed to pull it off with a great group of underdog characters and many memorable storylines.

For those who do still love this world, Young Sheldon is likely going to continue for a while — so long as the ratings stay great there, we don’t foresee it ending anytime soon.

In case you’re curious…

Over the next few days, we’re going to be talking more about possible spin-offs and other things that can be done in the wake of this final-season announcement. This is huge news, but we still think it’s possible that the world can go on in other forms
