How The Originals season 5 can continue to make Phoebe Tonkin’s Hayley shine

The OriginalsIn today’s edition of our CarterMatt Unsung Heroes article series, we are shifting the focus over to The CW — and, to be specific, a series in The Originals that certainly has a lot of anti-heroes, to put it mildly. Here you’ve got characters who are murderers, assassins, warlocks, schemes, and criminals of the highest degree. Yet, we do think that there are many who still act with the best of intentions in mind much of the time.

To be specific, we’re speaking here about someone in Hayley Marshall who, over the years, has presented us so many different dimensions of what someone in her position could be. While she understood being a werewolf long before her first appearance on The Vampire Diaries years ago, you still saw her journey towards becoming a hybrid and then, to go along with that, how she is adapting to some of the crazy world that is around her. She’s been a fighter, a warrior, determined, and also so much more. She is the perfect Unsung Hero just because she does so much, and yet also doesn’t get anywhere near as much conversation around it.

What Hayley brings to the series that is so appealing starts with the simple idea of her tenacity. This is a character who stops at nothing to get what she wants not just for herself, but for those close to her. She’s fought for Elijah and she’s absolutely fought for Hope many times over. They’ve been through hell and she’s willing to risk great peril for those close to her. She also doesn’t exactly do any of it in hopes of getting great praise or acclaim for any of it. The thing that she wants more than anything else is simply an opportunity to have both herself and those close to her okay. She strives for happiness and doesn’t let go of that, even if she’s seen and experienced so much that may make some of these efforts look fruitless.

Hayley is a character who cares deeply about her friends and will remain true to them for however long that she can. She’s tough, but also emotional and caring would need to be. As we get into the fifth season we’re hoping that there are chances to see some of her heroism come out either as a mother, a friend, or someone who has gone through the fires and is ready to emerge. Phoebe Tonkin has anchored this character with passion, ferocity, and above all else a desire to keep pushing for more. With the end of the road coming on the other side of the horizon, we certainly hope that she gets to leave every bit of a hero that she deserves to be.

It’s clear that Hayley will go through more pain; here’s to hoping that there is some joy on the other side of it.
