Maisie Williams denies Game of Thrones’ final season premiere date reports
Following recent comments that were published in prominent UK publication Metro, Maisie Williams herself took to her Twitter account to deny some of what was attributed to her. She claims specifically that her comments are from an old interview from years beforehand, which makes some sense given that in the past, Game of Thrones also premiered in April. It wasn’t until season 7 that the series started to change things up insofar as premiere dates go.
The funny thing here is that even though Williams’ reported quotes may not be accurate to the present, we still would not be shocked to see Game of Thrones’ final season still premiere in April 2019. The timing just feels perfect for the show. For starters, it could premiere at a time when it is not in conflict with The Walking Dead. Also, it would spare it from airing against the Oscars, the NFL, or any of the other competition that tends to fill up the airwaves a little bit earlier on in the year.

The real truth of the matter is that Game of Thrones could air against almost anything at this point and succeed. It is the most successful series in the history of HBO and has inspired fans the entire world over. It’s inspired everything from multiple spin-offs in development to product lines to an avalanche of sales for the George R.R. Martin book series. It could dominate against almost anything, but HBO will definitely want to give Game of Thrones the best platform that they possibly can. We know already that the series is not premiering until 2019 and there’s no better time in the first few months of the year. April feels like the best, unless HBO just wants to push things into the summer for the sake of trying to capture the same enormous audience that they did during season 7.
When could the official premiere date be announced?
Think in terms of late this year / early 2019. There’s no real hurry for HBO to rush this along; we just hope that it’s not announced in the form of some sort of dorky live stream.
