The Flash season 4 episode 3 review: Who’s pregnant? The Thinker’s plan
Last week, the show suffered as a result of having somewhat of a lackluster villain and in the process of that, not a very engrossing story. We also saw very little of the season’s Big Bad in The Thinker outside of the closing minutes.
However, over the course of tonight’s episode there was a lot more of The Thinker as we started to get more of a sense as to what he was up to. He was using an accident of dark-matter exposure, one that came about when Barry came from the Speed Force, to test various metas who were born out of it. This week, the test subject was none other than Becky Sharpe a.k.a. Hazard, a woman who suddenly found herself with incredible luck after having spent the vast majority of her life forced into terrible thing after terrible thing. The problem is that her luck was so good for her that she could enforce terrible luck onto other people. It was a very unique ability in that it was cognitive, sudden, and unpredictable. You didn’t know in advance how it would impact you.
Unfortunately, for the team they were experiencing — whether it was the result of Hazard of just a coincidence — terrible luck of their own. Wally got a breakup recording from Jesse, Barry and Iris struggled to find a wedding venue, and Joe West started to think about relocating after learning that his leaky pipes went from being charming to actually pretty destructive.
Eventually, this luck started to make everyone so paranoid that Iris tried to get Barry married — only to have the minister get an allergic reaction midway through.
Things go from silly to scary
Basically, we saw Hazard go to the casino and the more good luck she got, the worse off everyone else became. Barry accidentally handcuffed himself, Joe’s house basically caught on fire, and an airplane was crashing down on Central City.
We do have to say that the scene of Hazard at the slot machine went on for an incredibly long time so that Harry, back in STAR Labs after his own daughter kicked her off her team over at Earth-1, was able to save the day. He was able to temporarily disable her powers long enough so that she could be captured and brought in.
The aftermath of the mission
Cisco invited Harry to stick around full-time, and then there was a big shocker via Cecile: She’s pregnant and wants to stay at Joe’s old house! All of this was so surprising that it was totally a shock to also learn that Wally had decided to leave the STAR Labs team behind — at least for now. After all, he was around for the entirety of the episode and they didn’t really need him. (Read more about this departure, at least for the time being, over here.)
CarterMatt Verdict
Maybe some out there will find this episode too ridiculous given that the villain really didn’t do all that much than just have things happen all around her. Personally, we found it hilarious and a lot of fun. By far this was the best episode of season 4 to date.
