‘Shameless’ unofficially renewed for season 8; Emmy Rossum returning
For everyone out there wondering if we would have more “Shameless” following some recent headlines surrounding Emmy Rossum’s status on the show, there is no longer a reason to worry.
In a new post on Twitter, Rossum herself confirmed that she has signed a new deal to return to the Showtime series, and that she will return in May to work on the upcoming eighth season of the show. While this isn’t an 100% official renewal from Showtime, it may as well be given that her status was the only thing holding the show back.
This is the best way that Emmy could have handled the dispute the rocked the news cycle the past few weeks. There were reports that she was seeking more than equal pay to her co-star William H. Macy to compensate for the years of being undervalued on the show; we cannot comment on any specifics when it comes to negotiations, but we certainly hope that she got at least some of what she asked for. As we’ve said a few times over, Rossum at the very least was one of the key cogs in “Shameless” from the beginning, but over the past few years in particular we’d argue that she is the most important person on the show. Fiona Gallagher is one of the few members of this family that seems as though she is managing to keep things together, and getting her life in a somewhat better place.
This announcement comes mere days before the show ends its seventh season, which is following (spoiler alert!) the death of Monica on this past episode following a night of dancing, vow-sharing, and heavy drug use.
