‘Top Chef Masters’ preview: Watch the first ‘Battle of the Sous Chefs’ (video)

Top Chef MastersIf you are going to watch and enjoy “Top Chef Masters” this season, let’s hope that you are doing so with a computer nearby. While from an entertainment standpoint this “Battle of the Sous Chefs” twist is super engaging, we could imagine it being a giant pain in the rear for those out there who just want to sit in front of the TV and watch something.

Will you be able to enjoy the show without having to worry about what happens in this internet companion? Sure, but only to an extent. The winners of these individual challenges, hosted by “Top Chef Masters” alum Hugh Acheson, will give their bosses immunity or some other reward in the elimination challenges. Meanwhile, the bottom three will force their bosses into disadvantages. This is a completely cruel thing to do to these people; they’re not just fighting to look great on TV, but for the people who sign their paychecks. Can you imagine what will happen if a chef goes home because of a sous chef’s mistake? The fact that these people didn’t really know what they were getting into beforehand is also a little bit of a party foul.

The theme of this week’s challenge was actually very simple: Create a dish that is in a similar style as your boss. Everyone did so, and it was almost what you would expect: Very pretty plates that we would want to eat, but nothing altogether revolutionary. It’s hard to take risks for a first challenge, especially when you have the pressure of your entire reputation on the line. Nonetheless, Hugh gave Drew here the victory, whereas Chris, Greg, and Lora have their bosses in trouble (and probably have some serious explaining to do).

Hopefully next time, we’ll have a little bit more in the way of context and a feel for some of these personalities. The problem right now is just that we barely know any of these people, and it’s thus pretty hard to wrap our heads around them or who they work for.
