Blue Bloods season 13 finale: Is there a cliffhanger?

Blue Bloods season 13

Going into tonight’s Blue Bloods season 13 finale on CBS, let’s make one thing clear: We didn’t have huge expectations for a cliffhanger.

Why? That’s not even something that is hard to answer, and a lot comes down to what we have seen the crime drama do in the past. While a lot of other series out there often go for the jaw-dropping conclusion, the Tom Selleck – Donnie Wahlberg drama has followed the beat of its own drummer. Rather than prioritize cliffhangers, they work to give you closure to most of their stories and offer up comfort in seeing the Reagan family together. This is one of the reasons why we have seen family-dinner scenes serve as the end of seasons before.

It’s also worth noting entering this particular finale that there was a chance it could have been the series finale. At the time that “Forgive Us Our Trespasses” was written, there was no confirmation that there would be a season 14. Everyone may have been hopeful, but there was no real confirmation. Since then, we’ve of course received said confirmation and we’re pretty darn happy for that.

All in all, we expected some big moments during this episode, but not necessarily anything that radically changed the show.

So what did we actually get?

Well, no real cliffhanger at all. Predictably, the show DID end with a family dinner, and the realization that Erin would not be running for District Attorney. All of the stories were wrapped up and now, we just have to wait and see what else the writers do come up with as we prepare for the next chapter of the story, whenever that may be. (Let’s just hope it lives up to all of our current expectations!)
