‘The Following’ finale spoilers: Can Joe Carroll be stopped once and for all?

The Following“The Following” has been building to an epic conclusion for quite some time, and on Monday night, the final showdown will be here between Ryan Hardy and the man that he has spent much of his life trying to take down: Joe Carroll. It began as an isolated case, and then became a task to take down his followers when he was on the inside. Following his release from prison, things have truly started to become insane, but despite it all, the capture of Claire, and all of the bodies that have fallen, we’re still waiting for that one last shoe to drop.

The season finale is entitled “The Final Chapter,” and in addition to the promo below for the episode, be sure to also check out the full synopsis courtesy of Fox:

“In the explosive Season One finale, Ryan (Kevin Bacon) races to stop Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) before his endgame reaches a deadly conclusion. Meanwhile, Joe leads Claire (Natalie Zea) to a special location and the ultimate showdown between good and evil takes place.”

Typically before a finale of a network scripted series, you are typically able to figure out who is going to make it through the hour, and thus be back for another season. With this show, though, we have no idea. Are they really going to drag the Joe Carroll story into season 2? With the title being what it is, we hope not since we would have another version of “The Killing” on our hands. At the same time, though, would another story with another killer manage to have the same sort of built-in intensity as this one? It is going to be a tough tightrope for the show to walk down.
