CarterMatt Awards 2019: Deckerstar, Supercorp, Destiel, McDanno among ‘Ship of the Year nominees

'Ship of the Year

Welcome to the 2019 CarterMatt Awards! This is our year-end tradition (eight years strong!) where we as a site celebrate some of the best that TV has to offer! Our staff joins forces to hand-pick nominees across a wide array of different fields, and then leaves it up to you to declare the winner. This has always been one of our favorite times of the year, as we get a chance to celebrate TV while looking back at the individual elements that make it great.

Today the focus here on ‘Ship of the Year, which revolves all around one simple question: What TV duo do you want to see together? The only criteria that we have here is that these characters cannot be in an active romantic relationship as of the start date of this poll. Maybe something happens down the road, but they’re not there at present. This is what separates this from Best Couple, which is about (you guessed it) couples that are together romantically.

Voting rules – You can vote for this award however often you want until the closing of the voting window — all polls close at 12:00 p.m. Pacific time (3:00 p.m. Eastern) on Tuesday, December 31. For more technical information on voting, including how to vote multiple times, read the bottom of this article; meanwhile, visit our CarterMatt Awards Landing Page for all of the 2019 categories, plus a schedule as to when new polls will be posted.

Now, let’s get to sharing the ‘Ship of the Year nominees…

Dean & Castiel, Supernatural – It’s still sad to think that this is the final season for Supernatural and with that, the last time for any Destiel moments. We can’t imagine where these two characters would be without each other — they may not often admit it, but they’ve changed each others’ lives and allowed each of them to see the world through a different lens. This is a ‘ship for the history books, and it’ll be missed just like the show will be.

Gibbs & Sloane, NCIS – A few years ago, we wouldn’t have imagined that there was a potential relationship for Gibbs. Yet, Maria Bello’s character is bringing out such a wonderful side in him and the two have slowly built up trust and an undeniable bond. There is no firm relationship here just yet, but it does feel clear that there are established feelings.

Kara & Lena, Supergirl – It’s been an emotional arc for these two characters this fall, but we want to remain hopeful that on the other side of Crisis, they can find a way to improve and strengthen their bond. We do know this in terms of the CarterMatt Awards — Supercorp are the reigning champs and a force to be reckoned with.

Lucifer & Chloe, Lucifer – At the moment, it feels very clear that the two were mere inches away from being established as an item before the Hell twist came in and wrecked everything. Entering season 5, Lucifer Morningstar is down there and we’re sure that Chloe, with the help of some friends, is going to do whatever she can in order to bring him back. Hopefully, that happens sooner rather than later.

Rue & Jules, Euphoria – One of the most compelling relationships of 2019, but also certainly one of the most heartbreaking in the end. The two now face an uncertain future following that subway scene — we want to root for happiness and peace for the two, but as are most things within this world, they will probably have some bumps in the road.

Sonny & Davis, SEAL Team – They’re not together at the moment — maybe that will change before this poll is over, or at least we’d like to believe that. There are obviously circumstances in the way of them being together, but we know the chemistry and the feelings are there. Can’t we find a way to get Savis back?

Steve & Danny, Hawaii Five-0 – McDanno are one of the model examples of what makes a great ‘ship — two characters who share a fantastic bond, in addition to scenes that run the emotional gamut. This year, we’ve seen stay together under the same roof, confront tragedy, and also continue to help people and put their lives on the line in their job.

Upton & Halstead, Chicago PD – Finally, we have two characters who definitely seem to be inching their way towards each other. They’ve established this deep level of emotional intimacy that is inescapable and a thing of beauty to watch. It’s as strong of a relationship foundation as you’re probably going to find in One Chicago.
