Grey’s Anatomy season 16: Is Jackson’s future set in stone?

Grey's Anatomy finale - Jackson

Is it possible that the Grey’s Anatomy writers knew Jackson’s fate at the time they wrote out the season 15 finale? Given the way that the finale ended for Jesse Williams’ character, we certainly understand every concern that’s out there.

Technically, we don’t know what happened to the guy … but it doesn’t look good. We don’t know how you can think that him disappearing into the fog is good. Maybe he’s passed out somewhere, or maybe someone kidnapped him or attacked him. There are probably also a dozen or so super-outlandish ideas you could throw out there as to what’s going on here, but these are the ones that feel, at least at the moment, the most obvious. we don’t think Jackson will just wander back to the car A-Okay. After all of this drama and a cliffhanger that is lasting ALL summer, we think it’s gotta be a little bit more complicated than this.

For those who are wondering, this cliffhanger wasn’t one that was created because of Williams’ desire to leave the show or anything like that. It seems to be more of a decision mapped out by the writers and producers themselves. Here’s what executive producer Krista Vernoff had to say to The Hollywood Reporter:

It was a creative decision. It was a cliffhanger. I want people to come back [in the fall] and talk all summer and wonder what happens to him. We have not mapped it out. The writers come back June 3, I’m on vacation for two weeks and then we’ll hit it. What I love about act six of our finale is we gave ourselves so much to play with for next season on all the storylines.

For now, we think Jackson’s gonna make it through this alive, but it is a show where nothing is guaranteed. Also, there’s a couple of weeks still until the premiere episode will start to be broken down. (For those wondering, Vernoff also notes in the interview that she hasn’t heard anything suggesting that Grey’s Anatomy season 17 will be the final season — the show’s been renewed through that point.)

While we understand it’s totally unrelated to anything else that we’re talking about here, we should also bring you the video clip below from The Daily Show — it’s good for a laugh as Williams notes that he’s been on a plane before when people ask if there’s a doctor on board … and people look automatically at him. His joke, in response, is that the ONE thing people know about him is that he is absolutely not a doctor.
