Is Madam Secretary new tonight on CBS? The waiting game

Madam Secretary

Is Madam Secretary new tonight on CBS? We’ve got SO much to be excited about within the world of this show, whether it be the opportunity to see Elizabeth McCord run for higher office or see precisely what is coming her way in the process of that.

The unfortunate news is this: Season 5 isn’t going to be sticking around for the month of May — last week was the Madam Secretary finale, and there is no new episode tonight or at any other point in the days to come. While the other seasons of the show had either 22 or 23 episodes, CBS limited it this time around, likely realizing that the show’s already made its syndication threshold and they could use the end of the spring in order to try and bring something else to the table — think along the lines of The Red Line, the much-anticipated limited series event that we’ve seen a good bit of promotion for on the network itself. It’s still too early to tell as of this writing just how that is going to far; if it does well, we wouldn’t be shocked if CBS opts to do something like that again in the near future.

As an aside, we cannot endorse the idea of CBS choosing to greenlight any new show that airs opposite the final season of Game of Thrones. That just seems like you’re deliberately setting yourself up for some sort of astronomical failure. It’s just a strategy that’s doomed to fail and it’s not giving a show a fair shake at finding an audience cause they will all be watching the ending of one of the biggest shows of all time.

Anyhow, we are now starting to move towards the future and we’re left waiting in the wings in order to see what CBS is going to decide in regards to the show’s overall future. We know that the ratings are on the low side, but we’re seeing with CBS and even The CW (which it co-owns) a real movement to find ways to keep their established properties on the air — at least until they get a final season and a proper ending (something Netflix can learn from after cancelling Santa Clarita Diet on a massive cliffhanger!). They’ve found some unique ways to keep their shows profitable, whether it be making money on overseas licensing or a streaming service. In the case of Madam Secretary, They have CBS All Access serving as what we think is a solid revenue stream for the show.

When will the future be known about Madam Secretary season 6?

It’s not going to be too long. Over the course of the next few weeks, we feel like CBS is going to tip their hand one way or another since we are creeping up to that inevitable time of year where shows get the axe. Typically, major networks like to make sure their future plans are clear before upfronts, and we imagine that something similar is going to be happening here, as well.

While you wait for some more news, we do suggest that you check out this link! We have a review for last week’s finale there and you don’t want to miss that.
