Grey’s Anatomy: Why Sandra Oh isn’t returning in season 16 or beyond
For the time being, it seems like Oh is more than fine to have playing Cristina as a memory rather than something that she’s eager to do again, and the reasoning for that is rather simple: She has another job and she’s beyond happy with this new role. In an interview with Extra, she elaborated on this a little bit further, while commenting that she is routinely asked by the media if she’d ever return to the medical drama:
“I just got to tell you, creatively you have moved on and while I know, and I deeply appreciate it, because I can feel it from the fans how much they love Cristina and that the show also still keeps Cristina alive, for me, [Killing Eve] is my home now … This is where I am.
“I am Eve and that’s where I plan to stay as long as the show will have me … And that’s really where I want to be.”

Is there any hope at all for the future?
We think everyone involved would be silly to ignore the possibility that Cristina turns up in the series finale to the great joy of fans everywhere — we’re not banking on it happening, but we’re sure that Shonda Rhimes herself would put in a call to Sandra in hopes of getting her to make one last appearance. It’d probably depend on a number of different factors, including whether or not it worked for her schedule and what the precise story is, but we’re not going to sit here and rule that out entirely.
One thing that is super-important to remember is that Steve Carell, for quite some time, said that he wasn’t interested in coming back to The Office, only for him to make it back for the series finale and deliver one of the most epic “that’s what she said” lines ever. That was a wonderful way to tie together that series and it goes to show that when series finales do turn up, almost everything said in the past goes out the window. We’re just not going to put a big red X over the idea of Sandra coming back … though it’s probably fair to assume that, save for some huge, creative swing, we won’t see her around before the end of the show.
