Grey’s Anatomy season 15 episode 22 spoilers: Nancy Shepherd returns

Is anyone ready for a tremendous blast from the past on Grey’s Anatomy season 15 episode 22? We knew previously that Amelia and Derek’s sister Kate was going to be appearing on the show for the first time, but as it turns out, we’re also going to see Nancy Shepherd stop by the show for a visit, as well. Her appearance will coincide with a big journey for Amelia, as she’s on the other side of the country dealing with a new patient … with a complicated relationship.

If you’re following along with where the show is at the moment, then you know a thing or two about the state of things for Amelia and Link. Are they together? Are they not together? Do they care about each other? We at least understand that there are some feelings there, but that doesn’t equate to a commitment. They’re doing this dance around each other at the moment, one where they are “keeping it casual” in some ways whereas in others, they are clearly gravitating closely towards something more serious. They can’t let the idea of being together go so soon just because they’re not ready to attach a label to it. The two are going to be spending a lot of time together in episode 22, but it may not be in a romantic capacity. Judging from the synopsis that we’ve got below (via SpoilerTV), it seems as though their journey is based primarily on work:

Amelia and Link travel to New York to operate on a patient with a severe spinal deformity, but they’re in for more than they bargained for when Nancy Shepherd invites them to dinner at her home.

The dinner invitation is where the “work” and “personal” part of the equation starts to get a little bit mixed. Unless Link still does have an attachment to Amelia as of this scene, why in the world would he go to dinner? What would the motivation be there? It’s just rather hard to see that going down.

Where things get rather-interesting here is that you’ve got Link, a fairly low-key and relaxed dude, getting mixed up in all sorts of Shepherd family drama. He hasn’t had any place in this world and in this episode, he’s getting the equivalent of someone throwing him in the deep end of the pool. To a certain extent, we’re kind of in this same spot, trying to get back afloat after someone just tossed us in without a pool noodle. Do we know Nancy? Sure, but she hasn’t been on the show in years. We don’t exactly have a defined picture of her relationship with Amelia. Meanwhile, we know very little about how Kate will act — while the synopsis doesn’t specify her, all indications suggest that this is going to be your epic Shepherd family reunion. From a performance standpoint, this is also going to be one of the better Caterina Scorsone showcases this season. We tend to get three or four of these a year that stand out from the pack, but even within that subsection there’s always one that stands out more so than the rest. We’re starting to think that this is going to be it.
