Criminal Minds season 15 spotlight: Our hopes for Spencer Reid

The first thing that is worth noting when it comes to Reid is simply where he’s been — at the end of the season 14 finale, JJ told him that she’s “always loved” him, a surprising revelation for those who have followed this relationship for some time. Did she mean it? It’s already dividing a lot of the fandom and the question that comes from this is rather simple: Where do you go from here? Do you pair the two together or allow them to move forward? Beyond that, what else is going to happen with Reid’s life? We’re going to focus on all of these and so much more within.
Bring about cliffhanger resolution … quickly – This is the first thing that the writers need to do when it comes to Reid and JJ. The longer they draw this out, the worse that it will be for the two characters involved (and for us watching). We don’t think the show needs them together romantically in order for it to be successful, but it does need to be addressed and can’t be left hanging for too long. Word is that Reid may get a new love interest in the final season (you can read more about that here), so there is a chance they could dive into this and still have everyone involved happy down the line.
Give Reid and Diana a meaty story – We know that Jane Lynch is going to be back for at least one appearance as Reid’s mother in season 15. While this could be tied to the JJ storyline, we want to get some sort of update on how she’s doing and for the two to take stock in the relationship that they have. You don’t get Lynch back without some meaty material.
A case that impacts Reid personally – We didn’t really get enough of that over the course of season 14, where it felt like a lot of his personal storylines were left by the wayside. We know that he wasn’t in every single episode, but it would’ve been nice to have more of a focus on him when we did have him.
What does his future hold? – Will Spencer stay at the BAU after the series finale, or will he shift over to teaching full-time? We’re not sure which job suits him the best in the long-term, but the writers could continue to balance the two out.
Above all else, we just want Spencer to be happy — he’s been through so much and is such an emotional heart for the team.
