Criminal Minds

Mrs. Carter: For those curious as to the aftermath of the Reid – JJ situation on the Criminal Minds season 14 finale, things may somehow be getting even messier moving into the final season.

According to a new report coming in today via TVLine, the CBS procedural is currently looking to have a new love interest for Matthew Gray Gubler’s character. This is someone who could appear in a good number of episodes moving forward into the final season.

As for what this actually means, that’s a pretty interesting question. There is a significant school of thought where you could say that this suggests that Reid is not moving in a direction where he ends up with AJ Cook’s character, or you could also view this as some sort of romantic challenge for her. The complicated situation when it comes to Reid and JJ is simply just the fact that JJ is married, and has children with Will. Before the events of the season 14 finale, there wasn’t really all that much evidence to suggest that there was any trouble between her and Will, especially when it comes to Reid and her feelings towards him.

It was a big reveal with what happened in the finale, but you do still have to ask yourself first and foremost, whether or not JJ actually meant what she said? Beyond just that, you also have to wonder whether or not she would ever act on it with so much at stake with her family. Telling Reid is one thing, but there is certainly a scenario in which the two just take this situation for what it is and try to move forward from it as friends. The main thing I don’t want to see is either Reid or JJ coming out of this (no matter what they decide) looking like bad people. I don’t want to see an affair under any circumstances and I also don’t want to see JJ torch her marriage to the ground for Reid without having a good long time to think about how this decision affects everyone (ten episodes is not long enough to play that scenario out  in a way that would satisfy me).

Based on what we have seen already, it certainly is clear that Reid and JJ being together is a polarizing subject of debate. There are some people who really are excited for it, but there are plenty of others who have come out being strongly against it. There were some echoes of a possible relationship early on in the show’s run, but Criminal Minds has moved in the opposite direction for a rather long time now. Showrunner Erica Messer told CarterMatt in a recent interview that there are plans to address the season 14 cliffhanger fairly early on, so one way or another, you’ll get answers. You are also going to get an appearance from none other than the incomparable Jane Lynch, who will be reprising her role as Spencer’s mother Diana. Maybe she will be a welcome source of advice?
