The Masked Singer: Donnie Wahlberg jokes about Rabbit rumors

Is Donnie Wahlberg secretly the Rabbit on The Masked Singer this season? That’s been a fun theory over the past few weeks.

Why is that buzz out there? It starts from the fact that the Rabbit is apparently someone with boy-band connections, and someone who also has no problem getting into character. Donnie is of course a part of New Kids on the Block and, beyond that, also plays a character week in and week out on Blue Bloods.

Really, though, the main reason everyone thinks that this would be funny is because Donnie’s wife Jenny McCarthy is one of the judges on the panel. It’d be a fantastic TV moment if it turned out that one of the contestants was actually married to one of the judges! The funniest thing we’ve had so far is Ken Jeong realizing that Margaret Cho, who played his sister on Dr. Ken, was the Poodle and he had no idea before she was unmasked.

Speaking (via TV Guide) while at the TCA Winter Press Tour promoting his new series Very Scary People, Donnie had some fun talking about the rumors:

“There’s a list of boy band-ers who are alleged to be the Rabbit, and I’m on the list. I think I’m trending third now behind Joey Fatone and Joey McIntyre.”

Donnie also said that his wife signed a non-disclosure agreement for the show and thanks to that, even he didn’t actually know who was behind the mask and is finding out alongside everyone else.

In reality, it’s fairly clear that Donnie isn’t the Rabbit. If he was, we don’t think that he would be allowed to openly talk about it anywhere near as much as he has. Also, all of the clues closely align to Fatone, whether it be his Orlando roots, his business in food, or even the Rabbit’s costume itself, which seems to be a nod to ‘NSYNC.

We do think that knowing the identity of the singer doesn’t really matter all that much — the joy of this show still remains getting to watch all of these people perform as these characters. It’s almost a chance for them to reinvent themselves and take on a new persona that they were never able to before.
