Should MacGyver season 3 hurry to fill George Eads’ spot?

MacGyver

On Friday night’s new episode of MacGyverthe CBS series officially wrote out George Eads’ character of Jack Dalton. It’s been a long time coming, given that the news of the actor’s exit first surfaced last year.

Now that his exit is official, the next question that you need to wonder is rather simple: What should the show do in order to fill the void left on the team? Eventually, we do think that someone will need to assume the role of Mac’s primary partner, but there is no guarantee that this is going to happen eventually. As of right now, CBS has yet to even announce if there will be a replacement this season, let alone one further down the road.

Eventually, we do think that CBS and the show’s producers will add someone else to the mix, mostly because it would be rather hard in order to continue the series forward in its current iteration with just four regulars in Lucas Till, Tristin Mays, Justin Hires, and Meredith Eaton. That’s a pretty hefty burden to put on just four cast members for more than twenty episodes a season.

In the short-term, there are a few different things that the series can do. Given that there’s a reasonably-small batch of episodes still to air this season, they may be able to make do with a smaller cast and then some returning favorites — it seems as though Murdoc will be back for an appearance, and we could see some familiar heroes stop by on the show again, as well. There’s a nice roster of recurring characters (like Leanna and Oversight) that the show could choose to bring back whenever they want.

As for the long-term, it makes sense potentially for MacGyver to take its time to come up with another person to join the team — unless they hit a home run in casting a new part early, why hurry things along? It doesn’t seem as though Eads’ exit was planned for a particularly long time, so trying to find someone new in the middle of the season may prove challenging. We’d take a look at all of the actors who are going out for pilot season this year and see if you can get one of them to jump on board this show instead. There’s plenty of reason to do so — while there may be inevitable Jack comparisons, there’s also a chance to join an established hit, one that offers job security (we think its ratings are still strong on Fridays) and a chance to have a good time.
