MacGyver season 3 episode 11

Following up on last night’s MacGyverwe understand the fears that are out there in regards to the show’s future. There is a contingent of people out there concerned about whether or not there could be a season 4 renewal on the basis of George Eads leaving the show — will the viewership respond, and is there a way to keep things moving forward?

We cannot speak at the moment to what future ratings are going to be for the show, but what we do know is this: Typically social media is a bad way to measure a show’s mainstream success. For example, if there are people out there threatening to stop watching MacGyver because George is no longer a part of the show, we tend to think of them as a small minority more so than some overwhelming army of people trying to issue a big demand. We still think that there is going to be a lot of people out there excited to check the series out moving forward.

Is Jack an important part of what made MacGyver the show that it was, especially during the first two seasons when he was a constant presence? Sure, but this show is really about the title character. So long as Lucas Till is around and as long as there are some excellent MacGyver missions, the series will be all right. Tonally, it will be the same and there are a number of beloved characters that are still in the mix — think along the lines of Bozer, Riley, and Matty Webber. We also feel like in the aftermath of Jack’s exit, there may be some other familiar faces from the past who help to creatively fill the void for the time being. Eventually, there could be a new series regular brought on, but we don’t necessarily think that there needs to be a big hurry in making that happen.

Ultimately, so long as MacGyver keeps even 85-90% of the ratings that it has now, it’s hard to imagine it going anywhere in the future. This remains a very popular show for them (especially given its timeslot), and it also has the name recognition that allows it to have an audience more or less all over the world. There are going to be people everywhere who know about this property and that goes a long way.

So be sad over Jack’s exit, but be also continue to be optimistic over the future.
