Shameless season 10 renewal: Will it be the final season?

Shameless season 8

Earlier this week, the exciting news first came out that a Shameless season 10 renewal is official at Showtime. Now, another question comes along with that: Are we gearing up for the final season? Are we at the end of the road for the show?

Speaking via Deadline in a new interview, Showtime head David Nevins did not comment on that one way or another — which means that there may not be a firm decision as of yet. It’s notable in some ways that there is no denial on the subject, and there’s also a tendency for Showtime to not announce final-season plans for some of their shows right away. They tend to be a little bit more patient, including when they chose to announce the final season of Dexter and while it took them some time in order to officially confirm that the upcoming eighth season of Homeland will, in fact, be the last one for them.

So why did they take so long to even announce a season 10 renewal, especially since the show is in the process of airing its final episodes of season 8? There was a specific reason for that, as it turns out — Nevils explains per the publication that he wanted to make sure that they had checked off all of the necessary boxes first:

“We wanted to make sure we had a deal with Cameron Monaghan, wanted to secure the cast deals and make sure (executive producer) John Wells felt good about moving forward. We got a signal from him and Warner Bros (before proceeding).”

While it is nice to know that Cameron is coming back as Ian, it’s still not 100% clear just how many episodes he’ll be appearing in. We do hope that there is room for him to be in more than just a few, and his return to us in some ways suggests that this could be the final season. If you are planning to send the show off, doesn’t it make sense to try and get back as many people from the past as you possibly can?

The next new episode of Shameless is going to be airing on Showtime a week from Sunday. If you do want to preview a little bit more of what lies ahead, we suggest that you head over to the link here now to do that.
