Outlander season 4 finale photos (part 1): Sam Heughan & Caitriona Balfe

Today, Starz released a number of different Outlander season 4 finale photos — so many that we’re able to do a three-part preview! There’s a lot to unpack from some of these images, and for most of these we’re looking at matters through the lens of Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe). After all, we know that many of you are hoping to have a big chunk of story for the two of them in this episode. Many of these photos do also feature John Bell as Young Ian, but we’re going to focus more on his perspective in a later preview.

In this first image, you can see Jamie, Claire, Young Ian, and Rollo all continuing their journey to Shadow Lake, but judging from the way in which they are surveying their surroundings, it feels clear that they are near the Mohawk village. The series hasn’t spent a whole lot of time with the two of them on the road, mostly knowing that we would be getting to this point.

Are they intrigued by some of what they see? Possibly, but more than that the top priority at present is simply trying to find a way to ensure that Roger is found.

We think of these next two images largely in the sense of these characters surveying their surroundings. With Claire, there is a clear look of apprehension on her face, almost as though she’s not sure what some of the Mohawk around her are going to do. This feels like a defensive stance, mostly a reminder that she comes in peace and does not want any bloodshed.

Meanwhile, this image seems to show a little concern on the part of Jamie, but it’s not to the same level as Claire — he seems as though he is being cautious, more so than anything else. He recognizes that one wrong step could cause an eruption of violence between himself, Young Ian, and the members of the tribe.

This final photo is perhaps the most curious, largely because it isn’t actually from the same scene at all — this feels like a clear hint that Jamie and Claire are going to make it back home to North Carolina before the end of the episode — it’s either that or they have found some other place along the way where they can clean up a little bit. Does that mean that both will make it back before Brianna gives birth? That feels at least like a possibility.
