Outlander season 4 episode 12 ratings improve, set another season high

This past episode, entitled “Providence,” drew in total 1.27 million live viewers. This was enough for the show to topple (barely mind you) the ratings for episode 11, and it’s all the more impressive when you consider the competition. “Providence” aired opposite the AFC Championship Game, so the easy prediction was that the ratings for the Starz drama (or at least the live ones) would suffer because of it. There seemed to be a relationship leading up to this episode between the ratings and whether or not football was airing else — the numbers were down opposite Sunday Night Football earlier this season, but rose when it was off the air.
In the end, momentum is showing itself to be a bigger factor in Outlander ratings rather than football. If we had to guess what’s going on here, it’s the simple notion that the writers are doing some things right. They have enough casual viewers hooked on the show that they can’t risk someone spoiling it for them — there’s a sense of urgency right now in watching live and finding out what happens as soon as possible. For many of these said viewers, watching early via the app isn’t always an option and 8:00 p.m. Eastern is the earliest that they can really see it.
Does this bode well for the finale?
Absolutely. The momentum is there still and beyond that, there is no competition from the NFL or many other big-time programs like awards shows. This is an opportunity for Outlander to end this season on a high note and with ratings that are hopefully a little bit closer to what we saw in terms of the ratings during season 3. Those were the highest-rated episodes that we’ve seen for the series as a whole, though this season has already done something slightly different here in that it’s improved over the course of the season. If you look back at the show’s performance in season 3, it peaked with “A. Malcolm” and didn’t come super-close to those ratings again.
We’ll wait to wager a prediction for the final episode of the season until this weekend, but we’re definitely feeling good about another record being set.
