This Is Us season 3 episode 12: Exec on Rebecca – Nicky meeting

Thanks to the This Is Us season 3 episode 12 promo that aired after tonight’s new episode, we know that Rebecca and Nicky are going to meet. The question that you have to wonder now is this: How are they going to meet? What will that look like?

In one way or another, this situation for the two of them is going to be incredibly painful. For Nicky, he’s going to be in a position where he is seeing this enormous part of his family that never got a chance to before — it may be a relief to know that there are people who are about him, but there’s likely also some pain that comes along with it. It’s a reminder of Jack and all of the years that he missed.

Meanwhile, for Rebecca, this meeting is going to conjure up some painful stuff that she knows now to be true, most notably that her great love in Jack was far more flawed than she first realized. There are some major skeletons that exist within that closet and that’s something that she is going to have to come to terms with. Nicky may be able to help with that, but at the same time he’s not altogether stable. He’s not someone Rebecca can rely on, at least in his current form.

Speaking via Entertainment Weekly in a new interview about this upcoming episode, executive producer Elizabeth Berger had the following to say about this potential meeting:

Obviously, it’s incredibly loaded and it’s incredibly emotional for her. Other than being on this quest for answers, she’s also just sitting with someone who’s a link to her past in a way that she’s never experienced before. Jack kept his family life so separate from her, and so separate from their marriage that to sit across from someone that knew that life and knew Jack as a child, it’s an experience that she’s never had before, so it’s going to be incredibly powerful.

Hopefully, Rebecca does get some answers, but there are some other questions to wonder here … including whether or not we’re really close to seeing the end of the road with Nicky. We’d like to see him for at least the rest of the season, but given the end of tonight’s episode, we recognize that there are no guarantees.
