The image above is the only image of Richard Rankin from Sunday night’s new episode, and it is notable for a couple of different reasons … with the first notable one related to the beard. It’s gone! After debuting as a rather-scruffy version of Roger, we now have the character here deciding to shift towards more of a clean-shaven look.
So what is the reasoning for this particular move? It could be, at least in part, a component in his decision-making before deciding to do one of the riskiest things that he’s ever done: Traveling back to the past. We already know that Brianna, the love of Roger’s life, is there. He’s going to be worried about her and while Fiona may try to either convince him otherwise or impart some sort of wisdom into him, but there is really no guarantee that he will listen. How could you expect that he possibly would? Roger can be rather stubborn when he gets mind set on something. Based on the expression on Fiona’s face, she is either pleading or reassuring — we could envision scenarios in which she’d opt for either strategy.
Provided that Roger does eventually opt to journey back to the past himself, he is clearly in for quite a journey for a number of different reasons. For starters, just finding Bree will be no easy task in a big world without many methods of communication. Meanwhile, there’s a difference between learning about history and also being a part of history. Roger will have to adapt to this and it is going to be infinitely more challenging than he would have ever first imagined. There will be a number of highs and lows for him, but if you watch the show for great performances, prepare to not be disappointed. We’re gearing up for some of the best from both Rankin and Sophie Skelton throughout this hour.
As for Jamie and Claire, there’s no confirmation that either will even be a part of this episode! While it would be strange to have an episode of Outlander without them, it’s clear that there is a lot of material that needs to be touched on here with the other characters.
