The Flash season 5 spoilers: Will we see a future version of Iris?

Iris West - costume

Is Iris West-Allen on The Flash about to get the This Is Us treatment, at least in terms of us getting a chance to get a glimpse of her in the future?

While it doesn’t seem to be happening in the relatively-near future, it does seem as though it’s something in the cards. Speaking via TVLine during a recent visit to the show’s set, star Candice Patton made it 100% clear that you will see Iris in the future at some point this season. This is an interesting iteration of the character given that we know already that she doesn’t have the best relationship with her daughter. She tried to suppress Nora’s powers following the disappearance of Barry Allen, and it seems like over the years her personality changed to something that is very different from the Iris in the present we’ve come to know and love.

With all of that spelled out, Patton also told the publication that, at the time of their set visit, she had not filmed any footage in the future. (We’re at least assuming that the series will just re-use Candice with extra makeup as opposed to bringing in someone different.) This is an exciting opportunity to at least understand this version of the character better and we absolutely do think that we will be going to the future on at least a few occasions. After all, the end of the first part of the season (pre-Elseworlds) offered up a substantial reason to do so. We know that Nora West-Allen has at least some sort of relationship with Eobard Thawne, but there are still questions as to what that relationship is in full and how much he has manipulated her. She certainly has more information now on his history with her grandmother Nora and so much more, and those are some conversations she’s going to need to have in her own timeline.

Here’s to hoping that these versions of Iris and even, to a certain extent, Nora in the future do end up changing, mostly due to the fact that Barry Allen may not end up disappearing depending on the events of the past few years. This is clearly what we are building towards right now in Crisis on Infinite Earths. It’s the most ambitious story that the Arrowverse can tell and while we’re not sure if the writers are ever going to get there, we certainly do hope that they will find a way to make it happen. If it looks as though certain shows are ending, why not just use some flash-forwards?
