Madam Secretary season 5 episode 6 review: Airport problems

Madam Secretary

Tonight, Madam Secretary season 5 episode 6 delivered something that we didn’t quite expect: Characters spending most of their time at an Irish airport after an eruption in Iceland. Things got weird, they got strange, and they also got funny as diplomatic relationships were explored in a very different way. This episode was not exactly about intense negotiations for most of it. Instead, it was more about finding more lighthearted solutions to problems.

Things didn’t exactly start out that way, though, as Elizabeth found herself in the midst of an intense argument with the Turkish foreign minister when it came to what was going on with the Syrian refugee crisis. Turkey was closing its borders and there could be chaos and genocide as a result of that. This is why Elizabeth pushed him so hard to go a different way but, at least until the airport, he relented. While there, though (and following a ridiculous fight over sandwiches), they eventually found some common ground over things like bad singing and being hungry / tired. They realized that there had to be a different solution to their problem and with that, it seems like Turkey is going to be a little more accommodating, after all. Granted, it’s going to potentially take a Security Council seat to make that happen.

Consider this a big win for Elizabeth as she prepares her Presidential campaign — she proved tonight that she can get deals done, even in one of the most bizarre situations imaginable.

Meanwhile, there were some other memorable moments in the airport, as well, whether it be a little bit of romance over chess for one State Department staffer or Elizabeth and the team trying to take up all of the power outlets to get some leverage on Turkey. We didn’t imagine that chess would end up also becoming anywhere near as interesting as it was throughout the episode, but that’s where we ended up. As it turns out, there can be a lot of diplomacy and power that comes through this, as well, especially when countries are investing as much money as they are. That’s why charges like cheating are so important — they can cause international incidents and this is precisely what we got at the end of the episode.

Quick Alison update

She met a guy named Gunner (really with that name?) and they were hitting it off; yet, apparently she forced the image too soon after getting some advice from Henry. She’s frustrated … but we don’t actually think that she is moving out just yet.

CarterMatt Verdict

Madam Secretary season 5 episode 6 was certainly one of the stranger episodes of the season — but, beyond just that, it also did have a lot of humor. These are the sort of episodes of this show that we especially appreciate. We know that there is so much going on right now when it comes to serious politics and this is a nice escape from that. Tonight’s episode brought you into a world where there were different countries cooperating and working together for the sake of a greater good.

Oh, and we also came close to learning out to pronounce an Icelandic volcano in the process.
