Last Man Standing season 7: Tim Allen on recent recastings

Last Man StandingWhen Last Man Standing season 7 arrives on Fox on Friday night, there are parts of it that are going to feel really different. We mean that especially when it comes to two characters. Mandy is being played now by Molly McCook following Molly Ephraim’s exit; meanwhile, Boyd is being played by Jet Jurgensmeyer.

These two characters are going to look and feel very different from the ones that we’ve seen previously on the series. When it comes to Mandy, for example, McCook is blonde and several inches taller than Ephraim. Meanwhile, Jurgenmeyer is a good bit older than the previous actor in the role in Flynn Morrison. It’s best not to think about how these two characters could have sudden growth spurts in such a sport period of time — it’s just comedy, and really it seems like these moves were made mostly with comedy in mind.

In speaking out on the subject of these new characters recently to Parade, here is what Tim Allen had to say on the subject:

It’s a daunting task to replace characters that we love and adore. I come from the acting side of it: I’ve been replaced. It’s very difficult for the actor part of me. Mandy (Ephraim) is a tough one to doppelgänger, so where we headed is not to doppelgänger. The new Mandy will not look like her because that’s trying too hard.

Boyd is going to have to be an older boy. Flynn Morrison’s family wants him to get into a normal school situation, which is probably a great idea, so we’ll move on to a Boyd that’s a little bit older. It’s going to be a little startling. It’s going to be a kid that can actually take some emotional shots from me and his parents.

As for whether or not these new additions will work, we’ve got a relative sense of confidence. Given that this creative team is responsible for the series’ success in the first place, you have to think that they’ve found the right people. It certainly seems like they prioritized the right thing throughout the casting process.
