Outlander season 4: Caitriona Balfe on Claire’s issues in River Run

Outlander

Outlander season 4 is going to be known for many things, from the story to the performances. Yet, the North Carolina setting is easily going to be the aspect that immediately gets the most attention. Jamie and Claire Fraser are heading to North Carolina, which serves as the main setting for the upcoming batch of episodes. While there, they will make many important discoveries about themselves … but also run into some issues.

For Claire, dealing with what was a part of 18th-century North Carolina life is going to be difficult — and understandably so. Jamie’s Aunt Jocasta is a huge part of the season, but some habits of hers are going to be impossible for someone like Claire to accept.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly (who also first posted the photo below), Caitriona Balfe had the following to say about the relationship between Jocasta and Claire in the early going:

“There’s a likeness between the two women, but for Claire it’s very hard to get past the fact that Jocasta is a plantation owner with slaves … Jocasta doesn’t understand what Claire’s concerns are. That stops them from being able to really form any proper bond.”

The issues that exist between the two are largely ideology-based. Claire Fraser is a progressive character, someone with a more keen perspective of right and wrong due to some of what she’s been through in her life and also the spirit of the time period she grew up. While we don’t want to blame zeitgeist solely for Jocasta’s decisions (we like to think that on some level, every person recognized that slavery was wrong), it certainly does play a role in her behavior. She is acting in a way that society deems acceptable, and seeing these forces and perspectives clash could be an interesting part of the season.

There is still one thing that makes Jocasta rather different from many other men and women of the time: The relationship that she has with Ulysses, if it does turn out to be similar to how it is within the books.
