Outlander awards watch: Could Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin enter race this year?

Sophie Skelton

It’s been a while since we’ve done an Outlander article through the lens of awards shows, in part out of sheer frustration over some of the Emmy snubs. We do recognize that, when the dust settles, a show would much rather have millions of loyal viewers than awards. Yet, it’s always fun to see actors, producers, and crew members receive accolades for much of their hard work. That’s why it’s so nice to see Terry Dresbach and the costuming team get some love this year.

So for this piece, we thought we’d look at some possible new contenders into the awards-show race following (or even during) season 4, which premieres on Starz November 4. It goes without saying that Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan are going to be in the mix, mostly because they always are — even though they don’t always get the love they deserve. As for everyone else, though, there is some flexibility. Because of Outlander having such a rotating supporting cast, it’s been hard to see a lot of other major contenders emerge, especially with Tobias Menzies heading over now to The Crown.

Yet, we certainly think that this is the season to watch for more potential buzz towards Sophie Skelton as Brianna and also Richard Rankin as Roger, as the two receive significantly more screen-time and a meatier story than before. They have some difficult stories ahead, and while we don’t want to spoil anything here, they are the sort of scenes that challenge every aspect of their ability (especially with Skelton). While we’re sure there will be some lighthearted moments, they will also be thrust into stories that are every bit as dark and raw as any we’ve seen on the series so far. While we won’t know for certain if they’re Emmy or Golden Globe-worthy for this season until the premiere, there’s certainly room for hope now.

As for other performers, keep your eyes peeled for Maria Doyle Kennedy as Jocasta and Ed Speleers as Stephen Bonnet. Both of these roles are significant to the Drums of Autumn story, even though Bonnet is as vile a person as they come. villains often do get awards-show attention; meanwhile, Kennedy may stand out since she is playing such a different character from who you often get to see on TV.
