Timeless season 3 campaign: What the expiring cast contracts really mean

This weekend is a significant one for fans of Timeless and the quest to save the show for one simple reason: Cast contracts are expiring. By the time every returns to work after the July 4 holiday (or even if they return before then on Monday), the cast will be free to pursue other opportunities without having to consider their plans with the time-travel drama.

So what exactly does this mean, and how does it impact the ability to save the show? Well, it’s complicated.

First and foremost, the entire cast will and should go out and pursue some new work just because we should want all of them to be successful. While the idea of them booking up work elsewhere is a sad reminder that Timeless isn’t happening right now, acting is their job. We wouldn’t want to root for anyone to be out of work. Also, it’s possible that if someone books a job on another popular show, it could lead to some more attention given to Timeless in turn. That could be essential in saving the show in the long run.

We should also point out that in the time between actors seek out new roles and now, another network/service could just in and save Timeless. If that happens, everything may be renegotiated with the studio Sony without too many problems. The contracts expiring are far from a death sentence, and the show isn’t even gone if the cast does get other work.

No matter what happens over the next few months, there is always a chance for the cast to get back together down the road, whether it be for a two-hour movie or even some sort of shortened season 3. There are so many examples of this happening over the years, whether it be with the Firefly movie Serenity, the limited series Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, or the Veronica Mars movie that ended up being crowd-funded. There are always going to be options and the best thing we can tell you for now is this: Don’t lose hope, no matter what happens. So long as the cast and crew remaining interested in getting back on board the Lifeboat, there’s always a chance that something could happen. The cast contracts expiring may just mean that we need to be more patient and schedule-conscious if the cast lands other jobs and Timeless still gets a second life elsewhere.
