NCIS season 16 spotlight: What should be next for Mark Harmon’s Gibbs?

Mark Harmon

Over the course of the next several weeks, Saturday is going to be NCIS day at CarterMatt — at least when it comes to sharing some character spotlight articles. We’re going to be taking a deep dive into some various people within the CBS series and with that, offering up a few different suggestions as to where things could go with them moving forward.

When it comes to Mark Harmon and his character of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, we do think that we’re in a very interesting spot right now. In some ways, we think that he is more settled than he’s been in a while — he has a routine, a great job, and good friends all around him. Yet, his boss Leon Vance is in danger, Abby is gone, and there may still be a sense of great loss following the death of one Clayton Reeves.

So where could things go from here? This is where some of our suggestions come into play…

1. Show a vulnerable side to Gibbs – We know that he is not a guy who lets his guard down all that much and with that, the emotional moments are critical on this show. We want to see more in terms of what some of those could look like for him at this point in his life. We know that come the premiere many months may have passed since Abby’s exit, but these two characters (put all of the behind-the-scenes speculation to the side) had a really close relationship. He’s going to feel that.

2. Build something more with Sloane – Does it have to be romantic? Not necessarily, but we do think that throwing Gibbs into a deeper friendship with someone is integral to understanding more of who this man wants to be moving forward in life. With McGee and many of the other characters, there’s a clear relationship there between mentor and mentee. Sloane brings a perspective more of an outsider and of someone who can challenge him.

3. Contemplate the future – Is Gibbs going to be a guy who just works at this job until physically, he is not able to do so anymore? We don’t want to lose him anytime soon, but there could be some interesting value in seeing if he can find more stable pursuits outside of work, similar to Steve and Danny on Hawaii Five-0. That way, we can get a sense of what his future could be in the event he ever retires or the show ends and we need to come up with that future for himself. (Let’s reiterate here: We don’t actually want to see him retire.)
