Outlander notes: New Sam Heughan special; filming chatter

Sam Heughan

Ready for a new morning edition of Outlander notes? We’ve got a couple of different subjects to get to this time around, beginning with a new special featuring Sam Heughan.

If you’re in Scotland, it looks as though you’re going to have a chance to see Sam in a new BBC Two Scotland Adventure Show special entitled Take a Hike airing on May 16. The photo below via Twitter features Sam out in the wilderness with Cameron McNeish, who seems to be enjoying himself despite the frigid temperatures.

Hopefully, there will be some ways in which viewers outside of the Scotland area can watch this, given that there aren’t too many venues for Sam on TV at the moment with Outlander in the home stretch of filming. (It feels like the sort of thing perfect for BBC America, no?)

Seeing Sam appear in a series like this is hardly a surprise, given his love for nature and fitness — they are key components to his My Peak Challenge initiative and he often celebrates the nature beauty of his Scottish home. He was also recently out in showing his love of nature (and his support for Cahonas Scotland) by running the Stirling Marathon.

As for what’s happening right now in terms of Outlander filming, Sam’s own recent post on Twitter suggests that they have been filming at night as of late. That, in turn, does help to explain why there are fewer public sightings of the actors and why all things location-wise are a little more hush-hush. Night shoots, we imagine, have to be exhausting, but there’s no other way to replicate some of the authenticity that you need for a show like this. Hopefully, there will be a little more insight on filming as of late, whether it be a couple more casting announcements or some epic scenes before filming wraps in the next month and a half.

One thing to still look forward to? Some of the scenes featuring the indigenous men and women who were cast earlier this year in Canada. The plan was for many of these extras to come out in late May / early June.
