Wynonna Earp season 3 filming gets even more hardcore — how so?

Lucy Lawless

Wynonna Earp season 3 filming is continuing throughout the first week of February, and in case you haven’t gotten the sense already that this cast is one of the hardest-working / bravest out there, consider this yet another reminder.

Basically, what the cast is doing at the moment for your future viewing enjoyment is doing more than just braving the cold — they’re also doing so at night! The new photo (see below) from Tim Rozon is your proof of that. Melanie Scrofano is shown in the middle of a night shoot, something that is reasonably common in shows like this where you are doing a lot of on-location work. Add to this the heavy supernatural component that Wynonna Earp has and you’ve got a show that really does need to brave these frigid temperatures in order to get the best shots.

One of the things that we’re enjoying doing at the moment is offering up a semi-regular Wynonna Earp weather watch so that everyone has a good sense of what the cast and crew are doing anytime that they film out on-location. Today, the high is a frigid 19 degrees Celsius, which translates out to -3 degrees Fahrenheit. At the time in which the team films at night, it is significantly colder than that. Also, there’s a ton of snow falling in the area over the next couple of days.

Here’s another crazy thing to chew on — it’s going to be a week before it’s even above freezing in Calgary. Even then, it’ll barely be warm for anything to start to melt.

The good news for the cast and crew

Obviously, there are precautions in place so that nobody is stuck outside in that weather for too long, but here and there they do actually have to film scenes in it! After a couple of years braving this winter, we like to think that everyone is starting to get more comfortable in it … or at least as comfortable as they can be.

Wynonna Earp season 3 will premiere on Syfy and Space later this year.
