Outlander in 2018: Five things we want to see

Outlander season 4

Do we expect enormous things for Outlander in 2018? It’s difficult not to when you consider the road that the Starz drama was on for much of 2017! This was an enormously successful year for the show, one anchored by big ratings, magazine covers, a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, and also one of the most ambitious adaptations we’ve seen of the Diana Gabaldon series to date. Outlander season 3 filmed in a couple of different continents and introduced a number of fantastic new characters to the show. Take, for example, Lauren Lyle, Cesar Domboy, and John Bell.

Below, we’ve come up with a list of our early expectations for Outlander in 2018 — think of them not so much as resolutions, but simply wishes that CarterMatt is throwing out into the universe.

1. New characters who shine in their roles – We know that Ed Speleers and Maria Doyle Kennedy are both on board the series for season 4 as Stephen Bonnet and Aunt Jocasta; they both are worthy of the parts based on their resumes. Let’s hope for a few more excellent castings.

2. Ratings records – Can we see the season 4 premiere of Outlander get to 1.8 million live viewers? That’s our hope, though we’ll admittedly be the first to say that Outlander has a harder ratings challenge than so many other shows out there. Because they air their episodes early on the app, it’s hard to convince many viewers to also watch an episode when it airs on Starz.

3. A season 5 (and possibly season 6) renewal – We don’t expect a season 6 renewal until at least, near the end of season 4 later this year. Nonetheless, it is theoretically possible that there could be two Outlander seasons announced within the same calendar year!

4. An Emmy nomination – While we’ve seen the show, Caitriona Balfe, and Tobias Menzies receive some love in the past in the form of nominations at the Golden Globes, we’ve yet to see the series manage to bring in the elusive Emmy nod. We’d love to see any of the cast members mentioned (plus, of course, Sam Heughan) get a nod this summer. Rest assured CarterMatt will do any campaigning that we possibly can.

5. A great season in the fall – Above all else, we don’t want to lose the sight on the fact that this is an epic love story featuring fantastic characters. Getting to watch more Outlander is the biggest gift of all — ratings, renewals, and acclaim are all secondary to viewing more of the story. We wish happiness and good health upon all of the cast and crew as they get back to filming season 4 in the new year … you better believe we’ll have more updates every step of the way.
