The Walking Dead Christmas Special: We want it, even if we shouldn’t

Walking Dead Christmas Special

We’ll start this article by getting the following out of the way: We know the idea for The Walking Dead Christmas Special is absurd. This is a show that most exists through a lens of people constantly murdering each other and there really isn’t all that much in the way of hope on the horizon for anyone.

Yet, we’re not going to deny that there is a part of this concept we find endlessly appealing for a number of different reasons, starting with just the fact that within the world of The Walking Dead, holidays really aren’t much of a thing for one reason or another. Sure, we get small celebrations here and there, but they aren’t of events like these people had before the zombie outbreak. It’s hard to even know what month it is some of the time!

The appeal of a Walking Dead Christmas Special mostly starts and ends with this: Humanity. We’re not looking for a cheesy musical or Rick to grow his beard out long enough to be Santa Claus — instead, we’re looking at this as an idea for people to express their common ground and realize that there is some element to who they once were left. Christmas means hope, it means family, and it marks a time for great reflection. These are the sort of things that are absent within The Walking Dead right now. Sure, the zombies are awesome and the effects fantastic, but you wouldn’t watch this show if it just revolved around you watching zombies make weird noises for hours on end. This is a show that is mostly entertaining because of the people.

One thing we will say, though, is this: As appealing as The Walking Dead could make a Christmas Special, 2017 is the wrong year for it. Having Carl, the one person trying to preach humanity, die during the Christmas Special would probably be the most 2017 thing ever. You lose one of the few beacons of hope left in the world and you’re left to wonder what could have been if he was still a part of the community. Save this special for down the road, and view it as a chance to remember some of the lessons of Carl and realize that without some essence of love and community, there really is nothing else to fight for.
