This Is Us season 2 episode 6: Mandy Moore on that Miguel – Rebecca reveal

Mandy Moore

Did you see that Miguel – Rebecca reveal coming on This Is Us season 2 episode 6? It may not have been the most shocking part of any episode, but it definitely gave us a bit more background on them getting together.

To be specific, we mean this when it comes to the timing of Rebecca and Miguel’s reunion more so than anything. As it turns out there were years between the death of Jack and when Rebecca and Miguel started to become a thing. He didn’t just start dating her in the months to follow what happened, making this a little less of a situation where Miguel just swept in to start dating his late friend’s wife.

Maybe this will allow fans to be okay with the character or maybe even Kevin? His dislike for Miguel has been going on for a long time and we get that he was Jack’s best friend, but with such a long time in between we have to wonder if there’s something more when it comes to Kevin not giving Miguel a chance?

Based on what series star Mandy Moore told Entertainment Weekly recently, she seems ready for a world in which her character and Miguel can actually be a little more embraced:

“I feel like this is a clear indication that the world can slowly start to embrace Miguel. This was a new revelation to us as well that was not something I was expecting. I mean, I had my own thought in my mind about when they sort of found each other, but I was clearly as surprised as the audience was to read that at the end of this episode…. And I feel like it opened up a whole new line of questioning. The more important thing is it was a bit of redemption for him, because he’s so universally — I don’t want to say reviled [Laughs] — but people have very strong opinions about Miguel.”

We don’t quite think here at CarterMatt that this is enough to completely turn the tides on Miguel, but it’s a start. It’s a reminder that this character is not some horrible man that did his best friend dirty by sweeping in on his wife, but simply a man trying to find a way to live his life and have the best future that he can. He knows Rebecca and they have a long history together; if these characters are happy, who are we to question it? We also don’t think Jack would want her to live out the remainder of her life without some element of love in it. He passionately cared about her through everything — even when times were the roughest.

Now, we just need more of Miguel on a consistent basis. If that happens, maybe the revelations tonight will start to turn some opinions on the character around.
