The Flash season 4 episode 4 review: Gypsy’s real name, Breacher, and Ralph Dibny

Flash season 4 episode 7 review

It didn’t take long for The Flash season 4 episode 4 to teach us one thing about Ralph Dibny: He’s a heck of a fun character. He’s what happens when you combine Richard Castle, a frat guy, and The Doctor — while adding the powers of Mr. Fantastic in there as well. (Yes, we know Elongated Man was technically created first, but clearly Mr. Fantastic is the more famous of the two.)

Early on in the episode Joe and Barry were able to determine that Dibny was one of the twelve people aboard the bus that was exposed to some of the same dark matter that turned Hazard and some other people this season. Ralph wasn’t too keen on sharing some of his history on the bus with Barry and Joe — and instead seemed intent on hitting on his clients and being a general tool to anyone who came around him. His actions came home to roost, and were it not for his sudden discovery of his powers, he’d probably be dead. Dibny can stretch his arms and limbs out to astonishing lengths; also, no matter what he does Barry doesn’t seem to have any interest in wanting to get along with him. The two used to work together and as a result of that, Barry knows his history of bending the rules.

Eventually Caitlin was able to figure out a way to help Dibny out enough to get his body back to his old shape — even better in fact since the pot belly he had when Barry first met him has disappeared. From here, the more we learned about him the more complicated his story became. He was blackmailing the Mayor as a result of some photos he took of him being unfaithful to his wife … and doing a pretty terrible job at it given that so many people wanted to see him killed. He eventually was convinced by Barry and company to try to be a better person — though this actually didn’t change all that much in terms of the Mayor trying to kill him.

Eventually, the Mayor was stopped, but it was a team effort. We’ll explain why in a moment given that it also involved one of the other new characters in the show’s universe.

Enter Danny Trejo

The other main storyline of the episode brought in the Machete star in the role of Breacher, Gypsy’s father and an absolutely terrifying man. He didn’t approve of Cisco dating his daughter, and as a result of that he decided to hunt him all across Central City. Sure, Breacher was deadly … but Trejo was also hysterically funny in this role, discussing how he killed other people and also how he holds all love interests for Gypsy in high regard.

In the midst of Breacher’s hunt for Cisco, he did get temporarily distracted thanks to something that is a big no-go on Earth-19 — people using their powers to cause chaos. He didn’t like seeing both Dibny and The Flash out fighting against The Mayor, and this turned into a showdown between the three. Were it not for Cisco turning up and convincing Breacher to cool off, maybe they’d all be dead (or at least wounded) by now.

The aftermath

Right after the Mayor was stopped in his tracks Joe finally admitted to Barry that he and Cecile were expecting a baby together. Also, Cisco’s actions in the field were enough to convince Breacher to cool off on him — we also learned that her real name is Cynthia and his is Josh.

In the closing moments of the episode Barry paid Dibny a visit and offered him a job — in turn, Barry heard the name “DeVoe” referenced for the first time since season 3 when Ralph said that this was who hired him.

CarterMatt Verdict

If you can ignore the fact that someone named Ralph Dibny was apparently killed off in season 1 (maybe Flashpoint fixed that?), the rest of The Flash was rather fun. We know that this is not the same Dibny that exists within the comics, but we also cannot say that this is what we were expecting from him.
