‘Shiptober: Will Shadowhunters season 3 bring Malec greater happiness?
At the heart of this edition of our CarterMatt ‘Shiptober series when it comes to these characters we have to ask this question: How far should this relationship progress over the course of the upcoming batch of episodes? Do you have them get engaged, married, or just stay in a committed relationship without the danger of the two of them breaking up along the way?
Also, another big question is whether or not the show plans to play things out at the same pace or in the same way that you see with the books? If you’re a reader of the Cassandra Clare novels, you have some idea of where the story is going for Malec and what some of her plans are for the two of them in the long-term. We do think that she, (as an author) is invested in the idea of happiness for them as one of the series’ signature couples.
Now, let’s take a step away from the books for a minute to focus on the show, which poses its own challenges given that the TV version of Shadowhunters may not last as long as the book series — it’s a total unknown. You want to make sure that Malec fans get some sort of payoff for their devotion, but you also want to save something for down the road. There are twenty episodes coming over the course of season 3, and in that time there are opportunities aplenty to express more in the way of commitment between the two. Remember that commitment doesn’t necessarily have to be in the form of marriage. Just give Harry Shum Jr. and Matthew Daddario some meaty material that allows them to show how much Magnus and Alec care about each other; if you do that, fans will more than likely be happy so long as you make sure that the relationship is moving in the right direction.
We also don’t want the show to forget about them either, in the event that the relationship gets a little more stable; we do know sometimes that there is a tendency for the healthier TV relationships to be ignored in favor of the ones where there is drama is kicking off.
There is certainly still dramatic material for Malec to explore without them breaking up — look at their upbringing, the Romeo & Juliet quality of their relationship, or how they will stand against more of the threats coming their way (Lilith included). Will they trust each other and stay strong?
As of right now, Malec is the signature couple entering Shadowhunters season 3. They set the tone both for the series and are a good barometer of how excited fans are.
