Outlander season 3 episode 5 sneak peek analysis: Roger visits Claire, Brianna

Outlander season 3 episode 5 sneak peek

Before Sunday arrives, why not dive into some Outlander season 3 episode 5 sneak peek analysis?

We wish that we could say this new sneak preview from “Freedom & Whisky” is anywhere near as warm and fuzzy as the photo above would suggest, but it is not. Instead, what it does more so than anything else is lay out the picture of where things are at present with Claire and her daughter Brianna following their return to Boston. In the time following their trip to Scotland Claire has made every attempt possible to go on with her life as though nothing ever happened; however, for Bree this is not proving to be anywhere near as easy. She is still reeling from learning a great deal about her father and her heritage and is struggling to find a spot to fit in. She’s withdrawing at present from Harvard and looking to stake her own claim on life. Why else would she be ready to move out of her longtime home?

Upon viewing this Outlander season 3 episode 5 sneak peek it is easy to be frustrated at Brianna for rebelling against what seems to be a good future that she has set out for herself; yet, you do need to consider her circumstances. While Claire may have had her life flipped upside down by the revelation that Jamie survived the Battle of Culloden, what Bree is going through in terms of new information is fundamentally different. She grew up in a different time and also had different experiences; everyone reacts to sudden life changes in their own way, so Claire cannot expect Brianna to want to live her life the same way. The same goes for Bree towards her mother.

You would think that the arrival of Roger would bring mother and daughter closer together; however, his timing couldn’t be any worse since Brianna storms out by the end of the sneak peek. Why is Roger in Boston? That’s presumably something that he will have to explain to Claire and Claire alone. Luckily, the information he passes along may be enough to bring Brianna and Claire closer together given that it could pertain to Jamie in some way — Jamie to Bree may represent adventure, an excitement that she had never experienced before.

One of the things to remember here is that there has to be a reason for Claire to travel back to see Jamie; Roger’s information (at least per our speculation as a non-book reader) could be it! The promo for the episode (read our piece on it at CarterMatt here) does make it clear that the ice between Claire and Brianna will eventually thaw, and Bree will actually be the one who pushes hard for her mother to go back and be with Jamie. She doesn’t want to be responsible for her sacrificing happiness in order for her to stay in the present.
