NCIS season 15 episode 2 sneak peek: Gibbs visits Dr. Confalone
What sort of surprise are we speaking about here? Well, let’s just say that it is tied to an appearance from one Dr. Confalone, who is returning to the series with a rather-necessary purpose: Making sure that both Gibbs and McGee are okay in the aftermath of everything that they’ve gone through. It does make some sense that they would need some checking-up on, given that the two parties have went through some serious stuff in Paraguay. After dealing with great trauma like that, it does only make sense that someone would have them go through some therapy.
Here’s where things may surprise you a little bit — when you think for a moment about Agent Gibbs and his history doing … well, almost anything, it’s pretty clear that he doesn’t like to do something if it is mandated for him to. As a result of that, we imagined that he would be kicking and screaming all the way home when it comes to having to speak to a therapist about what he’s gone through. Yet, Gibbs is almost surprisingly chipper about it! He doesn’t show a whole lot of frustrating over being told what to do here, and he almost accepts and anticipates whatever is coming his way. It’s an unusual position for him to be in, but he seems open to having a new attitude and being excited to enter a discussion about his trauma.
We certainly don’t want to say it was a good thing for Gibbs to have gone through what he did, but we do believe that change often is a great benefit for someone — and for Gibbs, that could be the thing that propels him more towards happiness down the road. We think the thing that could be the most transformative for him is not actually what happened with the capture; instead, it may have been the realization that when he returned, he did not return to much other than his job. He has given up most of his life for the sake of continuing to have his career, but he’s now late in the game and likely does realize at this point that there is only so much longer that he can continue to be an agent and he needs to figure out what the rest of his life will look like. (We’re not saying Mark Harmon is leaving, so stop that, tabloids ready to take CarterMatt out of context.) He may want more connections, and having a more positive outlook and embracing change could help to make that happen.

I think the chipper and cooperative outlook we see from Gibbs in the clip is the writers way to set up the fact that Gibbs is not handling the trauma as well as would appear. He is over compensating, trying to convince himself and others. I would love it if, as you conjecture, he does take this as an opportunity to be open to a relationship. It would be fantastic if that would be Maria Bello’s role!
I absolutely loved the season opener – maybe the best one yet! Mark Harmon and Sean Murray played it perfectly! I am psyched for a really great season 15 (and hopefully more to follow)! I’m counting on Mark – my favorite – hanging around!
