Every great hero needs a villain — even an antihero like the title character on Lucifer. With that in mind, say hello to the Sinnerman! This character is the Big Bad for the upcoming third season of the show, and most signs point towards them being a force to be reckoned with.
Granted, there are some other issues that will rise to the occasion with this character beyond just his actions — which include kidnapping Lucifer at the end of this past season. One of the biggest ones is simply going to be not knowing who this character really is. That’s one of the things that will be investigated over the course of time, as you learn more about him, how he operates, and how many connections he has to some of the other characters within the world of the show.
In speaking on this subject a little bit more in an interview with TV Guide, executive producer Joe Henderson described the character with the following statement:
“We look at him like a bizarre reflection of Lucifer. We learn in an upcoming episode that he also gives out favors, but his are a little bit more nefarious. When this guy gives out favors, you’re really dreading the payment that you’ll have to give. So it’s sort of the Devil facing a dark reflection of himself.”
Basically, one of the big stories and themes for this third season is going to be Lucifer trying to figure out who this character is, but also what separates the two of them. This is a devious figure, but Lucifer himself has a history of deviousness. Just look at the way he’s treated Chloe through two seasons; it makes us absolutely wonder whether or not he is motivated in part to be more honest and upfront with her now as a direct result of how he’s feeling towards some of what’s happened with him. Sooner or later he may realize that living in falsehoods fails to get you anywhere; he may now be feeling the way that he is as a direct result of that.
For the record all signs point towards more information coming out about the Lucifer – Chloe relationship at some point during the premiere. Unfortunately, you’re probably going to be waiting a while longer to get some additional news regarding the Sinnerman. There doesn’t appear to be anything concrete coming in this department for at least the first couple of episodes, but we anticipate that changing down the road. When you’ve got a show like this you do eventually want to show the character in the flesh; after all, if you don’t you lose a great deal of your dramatic tension since you don’t know who you are up against. Consider this something we’ll be watching at CarterMatt as the story progresses.
