America’s Got Talent: Chase Goehring auditions to ‘Hurt’ original song

Goehring

Chase Goehring is one of the many acts who will shine on America’s Got Talent tonight, and with an original song entitled “Hurt.”

The story itself is fun — he’s a 21-year old from a really small town. He’s the sort of guy who is great for this song, mostly because he has that songwriter vibe that you don’t get on The Voice or the returning American Idol. Maybe this show is sometimes a little less of a platform for singers in that they have fewer performances over the course of the season, but it allows them more in terms of their creative integrity.

In introducing the song, Chase describes it as being about attempting to help a woman who is in a bad relationship. He wants to be there to help, and you get the sense of that when you hear him sing it. He’s a very good vocalist, but more than that there is a natural connection to what he’s singing about that is rare on this or any other show. This is one of the things that helped Grace VanderWaal last year, and it could absolutely help him here. He also could be helped in part by the online following that he has already.

If there is an easy comparison between Goehring and another artist, it has to be Jason Mraz with the rapid-fire lyrics and the vocal theatrics he does with the song. While this song is certainly a bit more series (think of Mraz’s “Please Don’t Tell Her”), we could see him exuding a certain playfulness if he is choosing to do a song later on this season with a little lighter subject matter. (Let’s make it clear: This guy is totally moving forward in the competition. Simon Cowell would have to be out of his mind to vote no, and the same goes for some of the other judges.)
