‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 12 spoilers: Meredith’s story about much more than love

We and much of the rest of the internet has long wondered whether or not a newcomer coming to “Grey’s Anatomy” played by Martin Henderson will be a love interest for Meredith Grey down the road, but there are two things that you definitely should know: “Down the road” means just that, and Henderson is not going to be showing up for a long time anyway.

Obviously, the show realizes that pairing up Ellen Pompeo’s character with anyone in the near future would probably lead to some fan riots. Derek was a beloved character, and while more than a year will have passed since the end of the show’s eleventh season for Meredith, it will only be several months for us. That’s why we appreciate some of the extra sensitivity on the part of the writers, along with the focus mostly on her career and also her life as a mother. These are stories that were touched on in a new Variety story featuring new show executive producer Debbie Allen (who also plays Catherine Avery). Here is what she had to say:

”‘Grey’s Anatomy’ is Meredith’s story, and now she’s finding herself as a single mom … and in the season, she will discover that she’s a single woman … She’s not really thinking about that so much right now, but at some point, she will be because she’s so beautiful and attractive and something’s bound to happen — there’s not a plan in place, but who knows.”

Much of the romance in the early going could be Allen’s to play, as there are some interesting times ahead for her and Richard Webber (James Pickens Jr.) that even after going through some of what they have, there are still changes to spice things up.
