ABC’s ‘Castle’ season 7 spoilers: Boss on writing finale in midst of uncertainty

CastleThe past few weeks have been rough ones as far as “Castle” goes, especially when it comes to trying to answer one all-important question: How in the world is all of this going to end this season? We genuinely feel for the writers on this one. They did not know much about the show’s future at the time they were writing this last episode; they did not know if they were coming back for another season, just as they also did not know if Nathan Fillion and Stana Katic would sign new contracts. While they know now that Nathan is for sure coming back, that is just one part of the puzzle.

So how was this last episode ultimately approached? Speaking to TV Guide, show creator Andrew W. Marlowe explained that the team is going in a fairly predictable route when it comes to wrapping up some stories, but leaving some room open for others:

“Writing a season finale, not knowing if the show is coming back, is always a challenge … [We] were looking for something where we could craft a story that if for some reason it ended up being the last Castle, we have some sense of conclusion. But the show also opens up a lot of avenues of storytelling with some of the dilemmas within the character as we head out of the season.”

This is probably the right way to go about making this episode. You do want to give audiences something more to look forward to in the event that the show returns, but at the same time, the last thing you want with a show like this is to give some sort of devastating cliffhanger. Could you imagine if this season ended like the one we had last season?
