‘Saturday Night Live’ re-watch: Woody Harrelson, ‘Matthew McConaughey’s’ ‘True Detective’ talk

SNL -Tonight, “Saturday Night Live” is missing what could have been a golden ratings opportunity for them. We know that it wouldn’t have been feasible to do a new show this weekend, given the holidays and everything else going on, but with an NFL playoff game talking place tonight on NBC, they could have cleaned up with a lead-in and then booking a guy like Michael Strahan to be the host.

However, it was not to be, but we do still expect Woody Harrelson tonight to draw some strong repeat ratings. In this periodic feature, we like to look back at a sketch from a previous episode that we think is worth another look, and while it was hard choosing from this particularly-strong episode (which easily topped our expectations going in), we feel like at the top of the list has to be the “True Detective”-inspired spoof featuring Harrelson as himself, and Taran Killam as Matthew McConaughey.

The first thing worth noting here is simply a little bit of fun trivia for the show, and that is the sole fact that Woody is a participant in “Weekend Update” itself. Typically, this is not something that you see all that much with a non-alumni host, probably because this is one of the most difficult things to pull off. Then again, Woody was mostly there to play second banana and set up Killam.

With that said, Killam is brilliant here, and all of the circular writing and McConaughey mannerisms are on point. While we loved the Jim Carry Lincoln commercials from his episode as the actor, there’s just something about Taran here that is great. It’s not even that his impression is perfect, but his energy is through the roof. We could watch this a hundred times over and still laugh.
