‘Glee’ season 5 spoilers: Jayma Mays says leaving was not ‘her choice,’ suggests other exits
Could we be saying goodbye forever to McKinley High after “Glee” season 5? While it may be a little too much of a reach to say that at this time, we do understand why there are some people out there who choose to read the recent comment by series star Jayma Mays as such, given that we know she is for sure going to be gone within a matter of episodes.
Mays made her most-interesting comments recently to Metro, explaining that while she did end up joining “The Millers” recently as a series regular, this is not why she is leaving the show. The choice was made before then, and by people a little higher up on the show’s food chain:
“It wasn’t my choice. The creators decided to do it. We knew it was coming last year — some other characters will also be leaving this season. It’s very sad to be going but I understand why they do it. It’s about getting new blood into the show.”
Clearly, the logical explanation for the character leaving is that McKinley High is going to become less and less important to the show as the setting shifts to New York City. Emma was already gone for long stretches of season 4, mostly because she is not the most necessary character now that she and Will are married. While there is a potential story there about them becoming parents, it is something that the show has opted not to really touch on at this time. What you really have to think about is that these two are probably going to get the walk off into the sunset together, and even if you don’t see much of Emma after this season (and Will’s fate is also uncertain for the same reason), we’re sure that they will still get their due in a possible series finale down the road.
As for some other possible exits, the logical thing to think about here would be that the rest of the McKinley High underclassmen would also be done if the setting changes more than it has already. The only way to work around it is if some of the characters decide to move, but we have a hard time imagining that this could happen, given how expensive it is to be in the Big Apple.
